I initially developed an interest in woodturning about 20 years ago. Whilst attending a woodwork evening course at The Women’s Workshop in Totterdown, I rapidly became ‘hooked’ on the turning aspect and was asked to make stools for a friend which involved copy turning. Much to my surprise I managed to produce work that was pretty accurate.
My next experience of turning was several years later whilst studying Fine Furniture at Brunel College. Again I managed to produce handles and table legs that were considered acceptable as part of the furniture making process and really enjoyed myself into the bargain.
Another student recognised my interest in turning and introduced me to the Avon & Bristol Woodturning Club. I soon joined and attended their wonderfully equipped workshop in Portishead. I realised I didn’t really know much about the art of woodturning or tool control. I was however, very lucky to arrive at a time when Dennis May was offering his excellent tutoring skills. Dennis being a very talented woodturner and patient tutor was soon able to knock me into shape. Within just a few months I was producing artistic forms, selling my work and enjoying the delights of tool control.
That all seems long ago as life has turned full circle. I now run woodturning workshops and courses in furniture making at Orchard Workshop in Kingswood, Bristol. Some of which are funded by Filton College (Community Based Learning).
I have also won several awards.
I am at present working on commissions and taking time to explore the use of other materials, colouring, carving and burning techniques which all create another dimension to my work which is proving to be very exciting and rewarding.
Please feel free to contact me in reference to any of the pieces you see or commissions.
